SOCOM Pro, Sony’s version of Online Pass

Are you a gamer that likes to buy your games used? If so, then you’re more than likely aware of publishers attempts to nix used game sales. Online pass, Project $10, Cerberus Network – many names for the same thing. Publishers print one time use codes on the back of game manuals or inserts that unlock bonuses, usually launch day downloadable content. Unfortunately these passes are also the only way these titles allow access to multiplayer sessions. If you purchase the game new, you get it free. Buy it used and you have to pony up some dough, mostly $10-$15.
Sony adds a new franchise to the online pass world. Zipper Interactive’s SOCOM 4 will include codes for SOCOM Pro, a big time effort to encourage new purchases. Looks like the plan is to support SOCOM for the long haul. See how after the jump.
First up is four new game types exclusive to Pro; Community Day Classic, Last Defense Run ‘n Gun, Scrum and Sniper Alley. These four games will be regularly updated throughout the life of SOCOM 4. All four of these were tested in the beta by the community so if you missed the it, here’s your chance. Also exclusive will be two weapons, the M-16 and the AK-47. Spec Ops gets the M-16 and the Insurgents get AK-47. Seems as though these weapons will be available within 30 days of the game’s release.
In the future, Zipper plans on releasing more multiplayer maps, co-op fun, and dedicated leaderboards. From personal experience, I’d also expect more weapons and multiplayer modes eventually. All is not lost for you cheapskates as you can buy the Pro download from the PlayStation Network a week after release for 15 smackers, or $14.99 if you prefer.
My hope is that Zipper takes a cue from BioWare and releases fan service content on a consistent basis. SOCOM is known mostly for its multiplayer aspect but the single player campaign could use the DLC love too. I hope they don’t make it just maps and weapons, but also bring the solo players into the fold. I’d like to see future content put your Seal team in past Ops, possibly changing the outcome. Bay of Pigs anyone?
SOCOM 4 releases exclusively for the PlayStation 3 this Tuesday, April 19th.
