Netflix finally releases Android app.

The day has come for Netflix to unveil their Android app. All the features of the Netflix ready devices are now in the palm of our hands. Instant viewing, adding to and viewing your queue, even picking up where you left off watching at home straight from a capable Android device over either a 3G or wifi data connection.

The key point being capable. The app will not run on every Android device at this time. Owners of the following phones are among the very lucky few: HTC Incredible with Android 2.2, HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2 or 2.3, HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2, HTC G2 with Android 2.2 and the Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3. Slim pickings there with most of the mobiles being HTC and the lonely Samsung.

Netflix is expecting to increase that group to an undisclosed number in the near future. Due to the open source nature of Android, each handset must be tested individually before the app will be able to stream content on it. Owners of older Android phones will most likely be left out because of recent models hardware advancement. I would go out on a limb and say most handsets that can run Froyo aka Android 2.2 should get Netflix compatibility in the near future. Just my opinion, no facts to support at this time.

If you happen to have one of the supported mobiles and are a Netflix member, let us know how it works out.
