How many people bought the Pet Rock because of the hype? What about the Phillips CD-i? Or almost anything featured on "As Seen On TV"? How many soccer moms, grannies and non-gamers bought the Wii based solely on the gimmicky motion controls? The whole strategy of the system was based on that one feature with no regard to anything the fans begged for. Just because it sold well doesn't mean they have the core gamer in mind.

Well, in the tech world, I guess we agree to disagree! Nintendo beat XBox360 and PS3 sales COMBINED for two solid years on their first "flawed product." I wish I could to that.

Nintendo lost touch with hardcore gamers a LONG time ago. They made me, an old school NES guy, stop caring about Mario, Link and Samus. I've been gaming since Nintendo was still making playing cards and just shake my head at them. They allow developers and publishers to re-hash the same crap to bring in the "casual" crowd instead of keeping their core franchises relevant. They focused too much on the gimmicky motion control instead of making it a supplement like Kinect and Move are for the Xbox and PS3. They packed everything into the Wiimote so they had to release an adapter to fix their lacking motion tracking. They ignore features that draw gamers into the fold, i.e. HD and streamlined online and instead focus on archaic friend codes and SD graphics. They lost that HD market because they arrogantly said "Gamers don't care about HD and online." My Wii is a nightlight right now.

Not to be an old fogy (but I am), it must be understood that Nintendo went crazy with the Wii release and blew sales figures out of the water. With both Sony (Move) and Microsoft (Kinect) finally on the market tacking the full-body gaming method that made the Wii such a hit, of course sales will decrease.

The WiiU is pushing for the HD market that the Wii lost given it's 480p limitations, but I will state, as a Wii owner, there are TONS of hardcore games out there that are often overlooked because they don't have that HD feature! Again, old fogy, but I did a LOT of my hardcore gaming at 200 lines of res., so 480p ain't that bad! The WiiU will support the Wii controller as well as the new huge thing, and I have little doubt that there will be other controller options that will make it more competitive with the gross gaming market.

And, I gotta say, I played Super Mario Brothers the week it came out. I often steal the Wii from my kids just to play New Super Mario Brothers just for the memories it evokes.
