Sprint is flipping its tracks on the whole Carrier IQ debacle. Word is leaking through that House Hesse is pushing all OEMs to release new binaries as soon as possible so they can be populated over the air to the most popular devices in an effort to completely remove CIQ from them. Sprint is not asking it seems but demanding it happens immediately, most likely starting with the Epic 4G Touch, iPhone and the HTC EVOs. The plans are have every device on the network CIQ free. All of this comes right before the Christmas holiday and it means people working the Sprint side in some of these places are having their vacation cut down to accomplish the scorched earth eradication of Carrier IQ.
I know a lot of geeks are more than a little confused over Sprint’s 180 about Carrier IQ. After all Big Yellow just got done defending their use of the intelligence gathering service. As some are quick to point out, all the info isn’t out yet about CIQ and they would be right. And that would also be a large part of the problem – no one fully knows what’s getting pulled from their mobile devices. What we do know is the lawsuits are hitting full steam and next month, our in-the-know Senate (sorry, sarcasm) will convene a hearing on the matter.
If Sprint is now trying to cut CIQ’s tendrils from all devices, they might have found out they’re on some less then stable footing. I’ll be curious to see how this turns out. What about you geeks? Ready for this mess to end or do you want it to go on hoping to get the full scope of things? Hit the jump and tell us.
