Geeky Game Review: Avengers Chronicles

We here at DHTG don’t hide our schoolgirl like crush on Zen Studios and their Pinball FX 2\Zen Pinball. The detailed tables, the crisp art, the attention grabbing bits for the fans – is there any reason to hate on the stellar series? If you said yes, you’re doomed to play MK Advance for the rest of eternity!
The latest pack of tables to attach to the series is the Avengers Chronicles. Zen tossed down a four pack of goodness based upon a quartet of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes‘ most notable adventures – The Infinity Gauntlet, World War Hulk, Fear Itself and the movie tie for the billion dollar juggernaut Avengers movie. All four for one low price spells win in my book!
Enough with the fangirl love fest, let’s get to the review. Fans of the Marvel super team will be familiar with the stories behind the tables but even non-Marvelites need not know the backstory to enjoy Zen’s latest offering . As per the usual, the developers spent a considerable amount of time adding in all the eye candy to keep peeps glued to the TV long after they lost their last ball. Frustratingly that happened to me more times than I want to admit. Yes, your intrepid review got caught up in the pretty, pretty lights and dropped the ball.

The Avengers movie table shows that a movie tie in doesn’t have to be a big mess to be awesome. Each of the heroes have their own decorated ball and each must complete their own missions inside the table to unlock more goodies. Fury presides over the Shield Helicarrier, naturally, dictating mission objectives and providing moral support. Loki makes his appearance as main baddie and he’s just as arrogant here as in the silver screen version. Who needs a $60 game when you can play this for a fraction of the price?
I don’t want to sell the other three tables short, they’re just as excellent in their own right. Thanos (hint, hint) does his thing in the Infinity Gauntlet, striking quite the fearsome pose, raining down destruction upon our heroes. Set center stage is the object of the mad titan’s lust – THE Infinity Gauntlet. If he gets his grimy mitts on it, it’s game over for everyone! At least Silver Surfer glides in to layeth the smackdown on Thanos!
World War Hulk, man is there anything more frightening than an angry, intelligent Hulk? A Hulk hell-bent on putting dents in the asses of the heroes who shipped him into outer space? Just wait until you unlock the arena and watch Big Green force his former friends to battle each other – to the death! The city is already in ruins from Hulkie’s rampage and it only gets worse when The Thing drops in for some clobbering time!
If there’s any one downfall to playing Zen’s baby is you can definitely get lost in the scenery. These guys pack in so much that a few brief moments almost overloaded my brain. Mix that with the fast, smooth gameplay and you can see why I lost several games early on. But it’s a small price to pay for a spectacular pile of awesome!
Just like every table released, the Avengers Chronicles fits in seamlessly with Pinball FX 2 (XBLA) or Zen Pinball (PSN). Grab yours now for 800 MS points or $10 bucks on the PSN. Thanks to the pinball masters at Zen for the review code!
