Welcome! You’ve Got Dial Up!

I cringe when I think of my earlier days of Internet surfing and the dreaded dial-up connections. Not only was it slow but the ridiculous task of having to log on was a real time waster. I, like many of you, had AOL. Since I didn’t know any different I was pretty happy with the company who were notorious for cd bombing your mailbox with their install discs. However once I got cable Internet I never looked back and the thing I missed  most about AOL was Slingo. It behooves me to learn that in this day and age 3 million people are still subscribed to AOL. In their heyday AOL had more than 25 million subscribers but 3 million is a pretty high number considering the availability of the various types of high-speed Internet available. I’m not sure what the going speed for dial-up is today but I would imagine even the slowest DSL would be faster not to mention more convenient.

How does one live with a life of little bandwidth? At any given moment I have several devices or gadgets connected to my home network which is both wired and wireless. Of course I’m on a whole different level of geek than many people but from online console gaming to streaming videos, the Internet can’t get fast enough. Perhaps these faceless 3 million are afraid of change and you have to admit AOL was so user-friendly even the least tech savvy person could use it but for the love of  Bill Gates no one should still be subjected to dialup internet.

3 million subscribers, probably on the BYOB plan, NOT dialup, I find it very hard to believe that those people are using dial up still at all. You can still use AOL and have a high speed connection to use it with.

Actually the BYOB plan went free a few years ago. The only paid AOL service now is dial up.
