Rumours of the next generation of consoles have been vast and varied, especially with the lack of any major new hardware at this years E3. However images have surfaced on the developer site Assembler Games showing the Xbox 720 development kit. The user who uploaded the photos, “DaE“, was looking to sell the supposedly legitimate kit for $10,000. While these images were met with overwhelming dismissal, regarding them as fakes, Digital Foundry, after speaking to a number of developers working on next gen projects and “DaE” himself/herself, confirmed that these images are the real thing. The images also feature the name Durango which has long been rumoured to be Microsoft’s code name for a next gen console.
While these images are legitimate other information about the kit is a little more sketchy and dubious, especially as DaE has supposedly been ”running rampant across Europe, quaffing significant amounts of Absinthe.” DaE claims that these dev kits were dispatched to developers in February and feature a NVIDIA graphics card. He also said that it runs on a 64 bit operating system and has 8gb of RAM. While the legitimacy of some of the tech specifications cannot be confirmed, in the wake of the Durango developer meet up jsut before GDC a source said that the system is 64 bit in nature. DaE also provided Digital Foundry an image of Microsoft’s Visual Studio tool which is used for coding.
