The hero of Final Fantasy XIII and driving force behind the narrative in Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lighting, is returning in a brand new solo adventure. What exactly will this new game be you ask? Well don’t look at me as I don’t know either! Square Enix slid a press release across my virtual desk, a release that was short on details and vague in its wording. Not that we mind, we love a good mystery!

Square Enix did state the game would be based around a new story with new characters and taking place in a new world. The gameplay is said to be “enhanced”, whether this means the game will run more action-y or not remains to be seen. If Lightning is really out on her own, I’d love for SE to make this a right proper action RPG minus all cinematic quick time events! Are you ready for more Final Fantasy XIII goodness?

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 31, 2012) – Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of SQUARE ENIX® interactive entertainment products in the Americas, today unveiled the final chapter to Lightning’s saga at a fan-filled 25th anniversary event of the FINAL FANTASY® franchise. LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII, due out next year, incorporates a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced gameplay system.

The FINAL FANTASY XIII franchise has now shipped more than 9.6 million units worldwide. Production is underway, and the game will feature Lightning as a playable character and will allow players to experience an active and expansive environment like never before.
