Meet Outlast, the PC survival horror game coming from big time developers. [VIDEO]

It’s fair to say that much like first person shooters, survival horror games will never go away. Some blow our minds, some get crapped on, some we never even hear of. Outlast is a newly announced survival horror game that might just turn one insane, cause some pants crapping and is guaranteed to get noticed.

Backed by industry heavyweights from such franchises as Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell and Uncharted, the game is priming itself to start a new cult of players. The developers decided to name their new studio after one of gaming’s biggest cliches – Red Barrels. Not sure if it points to their extensive years in gaming or that they could blow up in your face if you become careless. Either way is good with me.

“Hell is an experiment you can’t survive in Outlast.”

Outlast aims to scare the bejesus of players by delving into the monstrous notions of the human psyche. Set in the creepy Mount Massive Asylum, deep in the Colorado mountains, our hero Miles Upshur begins investigating the facility thanks to an inside source. Once in the asylum, Miles learns that scary things that bump in the night might not be the worse things out there. “There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them” – Red Barrel co-founder Philippe Morin.

Red Barrels plans to bring the PC only title to Steam sometime in 2013. Keep your peepers here as more info and images come in! Hit the break to catch the press release, a few screen shots and the first teaser trailer.

New Independent Survival-Horror Title Coming to PC in 2013, Teaser Trailer Released

MONTREAL & MOUNT MASSIVE, COLORADO – October 17,2012 - In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line being science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Founded in Montreal by industry veterans from some of the biggest game franchises in history, including Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Uncharted, Red Barrels is an independent game studio focused on creating unforgettable single-player games. Outlast is their first title, a true survival-horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind. Outlast will be coming to PC digital download in 2013.

“There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them,” said Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels.

“Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games,” said co-founder David Chateauneuf. “We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”

When asked for comment, a spokesperson for the Murkoff Corporation responded: “Murkoff does not comment on speculation and rumors, especially ones started by conspiracy theorists and urban myth chasers.”

Ooh, will definitely keep my eye out for this when it gets released in 2013. I could see this being quite entertaining to play on the big office TV on Friday evenings. Curious to know if cheung31 and rickiesherman and into survival games? Would this fly in the livefyre office?

@meghankrane I like to stray into the horror-survival genre here and there. The all-time favourite being: Resident Evil 4 with F.E.A.R. coming in close at 2nd place.

I think the fact that Outlast is a PC-only title says a lot about the intended audience. It’s not necessarily for the mainstream and that’s not surprising coming from Red Barrels studios. I only am comfortable with any sort of first-person/adventure game on the PC due to my limited accuracy using a gamepad, so this would be awesome.

I might have to fire up Steam and play this scary looking game. Just in time for Halloween.

@meghankrane  cheung31  This seems pretty sweet, and a sincere shot at the survival aspect of horror games instead of “guns ablazing in a scary place”. I’m excited to say the very least after reading up on the team making it :)
