What can be more cool than Retro Gaming? I mean, come on, just remember all those countless hours and sleepless nights you’ve invested into beating prominent titles like Pokémon, Castlevania, Contra or Super Mario. Man, those were the days. I wish I could go though these experiences again. And you know what? I can!
It’s not those filthy remakes we are talking about here made with zero passion for the single purpose of monetizing on our nostalgia. I am talking about the real deal retro games – the same one’s you loved as a kid, but launched on your Android-powered Smartphone.
Here’s what you will need:
- The games themselves. They are usually called ROMs. And it is not a secret that ROMs free download is available on countless online resources today.
- An emulator. This is the program you install on your Android device. It’s capable of reading and rendering ROM files. In simpler words – an emulator is the digital version of a respective console.
That’s it. Both ROM files and emulators are free meaning you can go all in, give up to sweet-sweet nostalgia and not even invest a dime into it.
A pro tip: have a separate folder for ROM files on your device. This way file management will flow smoother. I use ES File Explorer to manage my files but you are free to go for ASTRO or whatever other app tickles your fancy.
What to get as an Emulator?
If it’s retro gaming we are talking about I’d go for RetroArch. The app is free, runs well on Android and supports all major console formats from the past. Sega, Nintendo and Sony games are available and more. You can even gain access to games that used to run on other platforms of the days long gone, like NEC, SNK NEO GEO, and even SCUMMVM or Doom WADs.
Talk about getting all at once, huh?
What are the 4 best retro games you should go for?
Do note that this silt is based on preferences of the majority. Your favorite game may or may not be included. Remember that we are all different and, at times, we do not share each other’s passions. I had to base the list on facts and stats in order to be objective so, no hard feelings, OK?
Oh, who am I kidding? I write for gamers and every single comment section under my posts is a salt mine. Don’t hesitate and toss some more in there!
That noted, here’s the list!
- The Legend of Zelda for Game Boy Color
- Punch-Out!! For NES
