I’ve always been interested in the concept of sci-fi books. However, I haven’t read much of the genre due to how daunting it seems. Don’t fret! I have declared that 2018 will be the year of science fiction. Together, let’s take a look at 5 space-themed sci-fi books on my to-read list. They should be on yours, too!
1. ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert
I’ve heard a lot about this book; all substantially good things. Dune is set in the distant future, among interstellar feuds, empires, and dynasties. This book tells the story of Paul Atreides, who is heir to one of the dynasties controlled by a noble house. Paul and his family are in control of Arrakis, a desert planet. The only valuable resource on this planet is called “spice”. So, spice is not only valuable on Arrakis, but is the most valuable resource throughout the cosmos. Dune covers topics as complex as religion, human emotion, technology, and politics.
2. ‘Across the Universe’ (Across the Universe Series #1) by Beth Revis
Across the Universe introduces us to a seventeen-year-old girl named Amy. Amy and her parents are aboard a ship named Godspeed, as frozen cargo. This ship is being sent to a new planet, three hundred years into the future. Straying from the plans, Amy has been awoken fifty years too soon. Unfortunately, this awakening brings her a set of wild problems. These problems include waking up on a ship with no rules, and figuring out someone attempted to murder her. The adventure Amy follows consists of murder suspects and the hidden secrets of Godspeed.
3. ‘Honor Among Thieves’ by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre
Honor Among Thieves follows a character named Zara Cole. While Zara’s parents decided to go to Mars, she stayed behind in New Detroit. The character commits a crime, but instead of going to jail, she is recruited into the Honors, an elite team of humans. Zara has been selected by the Leviathan, a race of sentient alien ships, to explore far reaches of space. Along with the dark truths that emit from this story, Zara meets new characters and “ships” that make her feel at home.
4. ‘Leviathan Wakes’ (The Expanse #1) By James S.A. Corey
Leviathan Wakes takes place during a time when humanity has colonized the solar system. Within the story is a character named Jim Holden, who is an ice miner in the rings of Saturn. Jim and his crew come across a derelict ship, called Scopuli, which holds many unwanted secrets. These secrets are worth killing for, and could even start a war throughout the system. Soon after, a detective’s trail for a missing girl is led to Scopuli. Jim soon realizes this girl may be the key to the mystery. Holden, his ship, and the detective hold the fate of the universe. Yes, this is the book that the SyFy series The Expanse is based on!
5. Descender Vol. 1: Tin Stars (Descender #1) by Jeff Lemire
Descender takes the reader to a world where all androids have been outlawed, and bounty hunters roam planets. Within this world is a young robot boy named TIM-21. TIM and his friends struggle to stay alive in this universe. As well as pitting humanity and machine against each other, this story breaks up worlds. Despite having little to go by, the premise of the story is intriguing.
