In this day in age, everyone should fear the intelligence of technology. Robots taking over the world? A completely rational fear. Okay, maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself. However, the spontaneous laughter coming from your Amazon Alexa device says otherwise.
Users of the beloved Amazon Echo have reported that they have been hearing laughter coming from their devices. Maniacal laughter? Maybe! All bizarre theories aside, a spokesperson for the company gave an explanation:
In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase ‘Alexa, laugh.’ We are changing that phrase to be ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’ which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance ‘Alexa, laugh.’
Ha Ha Ha… Very Funny, Humans!
This wouldn’t be as interesting without some proper evidence. Luckily, Twitter has come to the rescue.

Now that’s evil laughter if I’ve ever heard it. So, it’s clear both Amazon and their customers don’t want to keep this issue around. The company has already begun the fixing process. Several steps will be added before your smart speaker will be able to produce such a laugh.
A company spokesperson told Buzzfeed:
We are changing that phrase to be “Alexa, can you laugh?” which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance “Alexa, laugh.” We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to “Sure, I can laugh,” followed by laughter.
Does Alexa Have a Sense of Humor?
The new Amazon commercials are certainly helping with the issues it’s been experiencing. When the AI loses her voice, stars such as Cardi B, Gordan Ramsay, and Rebel Wilson take over. It seems Alexa is having all sorts of fun with her voice.
From the commercials to the technical issues, Amazon is bringing popularity and hype to their products. I’m sure the random laughing glitch was not done purposely. However, the confusion it instilled in its listeners was well worth it. Since we got creepy laughter out of the way, I feel it’s time for intense sobbing. Sharing this emotional moment with your Amazon Echo would be next level.
So, it’s safe to say we aren’t heading into a robot war just yet. What are your thoughts on this comical issue? If you were to pick any celebrity to provide the laughter for your devices, who would it be? Let us know what’s rattling around in your mind!
