AMC looking to make phone-friendly theaters a thing

One of the biggest no-nos in the theater world is to use your phone while the movie is rolling. As a heavy blogger, social butterfly, and sometimes movie reviewer, I of course feel the itch during a low part in a movie and wonder who has sent me a recent Facebook update. With that said I just cannot get on board with this as a thing. If done, AMC will have to go about this very carefully in order not to upset the other movie goers who are not so much on the phone friendly side.

With the proposed purchase of Carmike, supposed to go through later this year AMC is starting to test waters on how to bring in new reasons to visit their theaters. Why not gym equipment in the movie? Why not attract the geeks and throw a few PC’s in there so we can do what we do while at home and play a game with the movie just kind of running in the background? The CEO Adam Aron had this to say to Variety:

“When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear ‘please cut off your left arm above the elbow,'” Aron tells Variety. “You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life.” and that AMC needs “to reshape our product in some concrete ways so that millennials go to movie theaters with the same degree of intensity as baby boomers went to movie theaters throughout their lives.”

I would love to hear more from you geeks out there on this? What do you think? Would any of you make this the choice when purchasing your next movie ticket? Check out our poll below and let us know.
