Hacktivist group Anonymous is once again out there doing something ‘for the people.’ On Tuesday they started shutting down hundreds of social media accounts that they have linked to ISIS. Their latest operation called “Operation ISIS” or #OpISIS was prompted by last months deadly attack on Charlie Hebdo.
Charlie Hebdo is a French satirical newspaper (similar to The Onion in North America) that has been around since the 70’s. On January 7th two ISIS gunmen entered the headquarters and slaughtered 12 people, due to some controversial Muhammad cartoons it published.
In typical Anonymous style they have released well over 100 names to social media accounts they have identified as Islamic militants.
“We will hunt you, take down your sites, accounts, emails and expose you,” the group said on YouTube. “From now on, there is no safe place for you online—you will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure. We own the internet.”
Apparently their attacks have started to work as one ISIS sympathizer has threatened to kill members of Anonymous if the exposure continues.
Anonymous identifies themselves as the common people. A multi-ethnic group consisting of Muslims, Christians and Jews, people from all religions and backgrounds.
“We are students, administrators, workers, clerks, unemployed, rich, poor. We are young, or old, gay or straight. We wear smart clothes or Uggs. We come from all races, countries, religions, and ethnicity. United as one, divided by zero. We are Anonymous.”
