Ape Escape 2 is Newest PS2 Classic to Come to PlayStation 4 (Rumor)

Exophase, the site that tracks your Xbox Live, Steam, and PSN activity, posted a list of trophies for Ubisoft’s PS2 Classic, Ape Escape 2. The list of 14 trophies appearing on the site strongly suggest Ape Escape 2 is PS4 bound. The trophy list is pretty standard in that all of them are obtainable by basically just playing the game. Included are trophies for defeating bosses or doing well in the various mini-games, such as “Hat-Trick.” Players can unlock “Hat-Trick” by, you guessed it, scoring three points in the soccer mini-game.

Ape Escape 2 is the sequel to 1999’s Ape Escape on the original PlayStation. It was about a boy named Spike tasked with the mission of collecting monkeys that have escaped throughout different periods of time. Spike is armed with a Stun Rod, a Time Net, and a plethora of other clever weapons and gadgets with which to toy with and capture the apes. He traveled to worlds inspired by ancient Egypt and Prehistoric times bonking monkeys over the head and sending them back to where they belong.

One of the most notable features of the game was its use of Sony’s DualShock controller. Ape Escape was the first game to really showcase everything the now iconic controller could do. You moved the character with the left stick and controlled the angles of you attacks with the right stick.

2003’s Ape Escape 2 on the PS2 built on this formula and starred Jimmy (above), Spike’s cousin. The 3-D platformer changed things up by giving Jimmy some new toys to play with. Ape Escape 2 also featured a New Game+ mode in which you could play the entire game as Spike and retain all the gadgets from your initial play-through.

There has yet to be any official confirmation of Ape Escape 2’s inevitable release on PSN, but this trophy list is a good indication that it’ll be sooner rather than later.

Are you geeks ready to go monkey hunting when this PS2 gem makes its way to PS4? By the way, Summer Games Done Quick did a killer speedrun earlier this month of the original Ape Escape. You can see that run here.
