Well in news that absolutely no one saw coming, Joss Whedon looks like he’s about to give Batgirl her very own standalone movie at Warner Bros.
The Buffy and Firefly creator is said to be finalizing a deal with Warner to write, direct, and produce a Batgirl film that will be part of the DC Extended Universe. The project seemingly came up last month and right now only Whedon is attached in any producing capacity, though Warner Bros. Picture Group president and CCO Toby Emmerich and DCEU heads Jon Berg and Geoff Johns will of course be overseeing things.
I’m pretty sure we’ll most likely getting the first Batgirl, Barbara Gordon as the titular hero, but that is alright by me.
Whedon as we all know was an instrumental part in helping shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe with directing the first two Avengers films and helping to develop Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so it’ll be interesting to see what he can do on the “other side.”
Right now this is some pretty cool and surprising news and I’m sure many people are hoping Whedon can stay on the project given some of the shakeups involving The Batman and The Flash, also due to some of the times Whedon has had creative differences with studios, but right now, let’s just think of what can be.
Also this news is a boost to the DCEU with it being the third female led superhero film in their slate with Wonder Woman and Gotham City Sirens as well.
What is you reaction to this? Excited? Not excited? Who do you want to play Batgirl? Let us know in the comments below!
