A DDoS attack hit the Blizzard datacenter earlier today causing all of the games currently powered by Battle.net to be completely unavailable.
The hacking group that has been responsible for attacks on both Xbox Live and Playstation Plus, the Lizard Squad, has claimed responsibility for this attack like the petulant children they are. They are also claiming that they have access to all Blizzard employee’s emails.
Interesting timing for this shutdown considering that Blizzard has just issued a cease-and-desist notice to a popular World of Warcraft private server – Nostalrius. With the server being shut down even in spite of the in-game protest staged, it’s hard to ignore the coincidental timing of this DDoS attack. Lizard Squad has yet to confirm or deny this theory.
Blizzard engineer had this to say about the attack:
“It looks like we experienced a potential DDoS on one of our datacenters. Initial impact appears to have ended and our engineers put up some buffers to resolve the issue, and realms should start recovering. We’re continuing to monitor and work on mitigating the impact. Apologies for the inconvenience, and we’ll be sure to provide updates as they continue to come in.”
At the time of this article, DHTG appears to still be locked out of Battle-net. I tried to boot up World of Warcraft to no avail.
I was able to get into Starcraft II.
