Battlebots has been rebooted and it did not fail to please as it came spinning out of the gate to great ratings. For those of us who remember the metal shredding show that originally aired on Comedy Central in the early 2000’s, there was great excitement in seeing what a big network could do with a show like this. The original version carries fond memories, from host Bill Dwyer, to tech expert Bill Nye, to the incredibly funny Sklar brothers, all offering their takes and predictions on what was about to happen in the Battlebox. It was geek heaven and I was hoping that same feeling would translate through to the new version. And did it ever.
My husband and I found ourselves cheering, trash talking, having a serious debate over who had won the match between Plan X and Wrecks, and losing our minds when a mini bot exploded during the final battle. The interviews with the teams were wonderful as we were able to get to know the designers of these creations. And I don’t know anyone who is a fan of the original show that wasn’t pleased to see Lisa Winter all grown up and still killing it in the world of robotics. It could do with a little more of the irreverent wit and humor of the original, but perhaps as the show builds, the hosts and judges will add a little more of their personalities to the show.
Overall, this fun summer series looks like it will continue to please all season long. Who will emerge the victor after the metal stops shredding and the sparks stop flying? I’ll be tuned in!
Battlebots airs on ABC Sunday nights at 9/8c.
