Will Black Widow Movie be part of MCU’s Phase Four?

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in the MCU.

Marvel is remaining tight-lipped about what’s to come in Phase Four. Following the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War it comes as no surprise. Marvel want to keep the cat in the bag as long as they can regarding how Infinity War will have affected the characters we know and love. However, a few clues are starting to emerge. Tom Holland very publicly (and possibly accaccidenta) revealed the new Spider-Man 2 movie will be called Spider-Man: Far From Home and is set for release in July 2019. So what else could Marvel have up their sleeve? There has been talk of a standalone Black Widow movie for some time, but things actually appear to be moving in that direction now.

Seeking Great Female Filmmakers for Black Widow Movie

It makes sense that they would want a movie about the most badass female Avenger to be helmed by a great female director. Deadline reported that they have whittled down a shortlist of female directors from a field of 49 potentials! Topping the shortlist are Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome), Amma Asante (Belle), Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate). At the moment, Australian writer and director Shortland seems to be the forefunner, but watch this space. Shortland, Asante, and Betts reportedly all met recently with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Scarlett Johansson.

What Would We Want from a Black Widow Movie?

From her beginnings in Stan Lee’s Tales of Suspense #52 back in 1964, Black Widow has been a hugely significant part of both the Marvel Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following her debut in 2010’s Iron Man 2, she has been one the most consistent characters throughout the franchise. Her appearance in Avengers: Infinity War for many fans was too fleeting. Although she was reunited briefly with love interest Bruce Banner and fought to the bitter end, many felt she was underutilised in the film. After surviving the events of Infinity War it would be interesting to see where in the timeline they will set her story. Could it be an origins movie showing her life in the Red Room and training as an assassin and spy? Could it follow the aftermath of Infinity War like the new Spider-Man movie? We can’t wait to find out!
