We have all heard of the recent Ebola outbreak, and witnessed the panic that ensued. Well, the time to panic (seemingly) has come to an end. A Canadian science team has created an Ebola vaccine that has proved to be 100% protection (the protection reaching 100% after approximately one weeks time) in a field trial in Guinea.
The World Health Organization have been quoted as having said “The world is on the verge of an effective Ebola vaccine”.
“This is an extremely promising development,” added WHO chief Margaret Chan. “An effective vaccine will be another very important tool for both current and future Ebola outbreaks.” There have been approximately 28,000 people infected in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and has been cited as the worst outbreak in history, with more than 11,000 people who have died.
This is a huge step in science, and we can only hope that it may also lead to breakthroughs in other highly deadly outbreaks. You can find the video interview/announcement regarding the vaccine here.
