Marvel Comics is already gearing up for its next big event book and its taking everyone in the Marvel Universe to bring down Captain America!
Following the aftermath of the recently wrapped up Civil War II, Secret Empire will be a nine-issue story starting in April with Secret Empire #0. The story will further explore the reveal made last year by Marvel that the original Captain America, Steve Rogers was an agent of Hydra.
In regards to the story itself Senior Vice President of Marvel Tom Brevoort said that, “Steve has been kind of lining his dominoes up around the Marvel Universe to be able to make his move and bring about a Hydra revolution, a takeover. At the point of ‘Secret Empire,’ they are ready to go. That’s the moment we hit as we go in.” Further adding that Steve will indeed be unearthed early on as an agent of Hydra.
Nick Spencer, current writer of both Captain America comics, will helm the story and the interior will be rotated among Steve McNiven, Andrea Sorrentino, Daniel Acuña, and Leinil Francis Yu.
While this is going to be a Captain America heavy story, Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso added on that, “this story is going to be told through the perspective of multiple characters, who are dealing with the threat this poses. Some roles and characters will come to the foreground at different moments in the story and play a big role in saving the day.”
Marvel’s main goal out of Secret Empire is for a newly united Marvel Universe to rise up, which I am more than fine with since all these big comic events have gotten into a pattern that is monotonous. I’m in fact kinda over the big appeal of heroes vs. heroes, I mean yeah sure there can be conflict among them, but crazy idea, I’d much rather see good guys fighting bad guys instead of other good guys for seven issues before the finale gets delayed for a couple of months.
A sentiment Alonso seems to share with me.
“We’ve just come off of ‘Civil War 2‘ and ‘Inhumans vs. X-Men,’ two big, dark events that had heroes fighting against heroes, over somewhat defensible positions. This is very much more an old school story. You will know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. This is not heroes fighting heroes, this is heroes fighting a bad guy.”
