One rule of writing a retelling (or even a reboot) is that you should have something new to add to a story that is already well-known. Come Away is an upcoming film that took this advice and combines the tales of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland in a new way.
Written by Marissa Kate Goodhill, Come Away is a prequel to both Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. The film imagines that the two main characters, Alice and Peter, were brother and sister before their adventures in Wonderland and Neverland. According to the summary, Alice and Peter’s eldest brother dies in an accident. They then try to save their parents from their grief until “they are forced to choose between home and imagination, setting the stage for their iconic journeys into Wonderland and Neverland.” Come Away will be the live-action directorial debut of Brenda Chapman who directed and co-wrote Brave. Goodhill had this to say of Chapman:
Brenda is a singular storyteller. Her decades of experience in creating rich fantasy worlds populated by complex characters make her a dream director for this project, which explores how fantasy functions as a way to cope with reality. Her thoughtful approach to filmmaking and indomitable talent make her the perfect person to bring this story to life.”
According to Deadline, Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) and David Oyelowo (A Wrinkle in Time) are in talks to star in the film as the parents of Alice and Peter. Chapman had this to say: “Angelina and David are going to bring a beautiful chemistry and depth to this magical story, giving audiences a wonderful step outside the expected.”
Peter Pan and Alice are no strangers to retellings. Although they are both better known from their books and Disney animations, we have already seen their stories retold from different angles such as the different backstory given to Peter in Once Upon a Time or Tim Burton’s version of Alice. Another angle we have already seen is them after their adventures such as Hook (my personal favorite retelling) which imagined Peter as an adult who had forgotten about Neverland and the video game American McGee’s Alice which took place years after her travels to Wonderland. A prequel, especially one with them together, promises to be a fresh take on their tales.
