Science lovers rejoice! Cosmos is coming back to Fox! Cosmos: Possible Worlds just released their first series trailer, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson is back at the helm of the ‘Ship of the Imagination’.
The original Cosmos was released in 1980. Carl Sagan, the famous cosmologist and astrophysicist lead the way though different worlds and explained how our own worked. After nearly 30 years off the air, it returned in 2014 with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, the head of the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium, taking up the reigns.
The video starts with Carl Sagan reciting a well known quote from his book Pale Blue Dot. The video dives into the fantastic images of space and the earth that the series is known for. The original series was known for its special effects, and it appears those are back in full force.
There are appearances from executive producers, Ann Druyan, and Seth McFarlane. Seth McFarlane’s monetary backing was instrumental in returning the show to television in 2014. Ann Druyan is the late Carl Sagan’s wife. She was the creative director for NASA’s Voyager Interstellar Message Project. She also acted as program director of the solar sail deep space mission, which launched in 2005.
While there isn’t a lot of information in the new trailer McFarlane says that it picks up where the last series left off. DeGrasse Tyson explains what he hopes to accomplish with this new series saying:
In this third installment of Cosmos, it’s an appeal to simply become better shepherds. You learn the commonality of all life on Earth.
It appears the show is going to go into more hypothesis about how life is formed and possibly specifics about how life on Earth is put together. There were shots of the DNA double-helix, which leads viewers to believe there will be some discussion of genetics.
The show is scheduled to come out sometime in the Spring 2019. Hopefully there will be more interviews or another trailer released before then.
