Dark Crystal Sequel Officially to be Adapted into a Comic Book

written by Jordan Cobb November 23, 2016

Children and adults alike no matter what the generation have certainly been engrossed and captivated by Jim Henson’s classic, The Dark Crystal. Its still held up today as one of the finest pieces of the fantasy genre. A sequel was planned for the 1982 film, The Power of the Dark Crystal and it would have further expanded on the world established in the first film, but nothing ever came of it and it became only a dream for those that wanted a continuation.

Well dream no more for it will finally come true. The Power of the Dark Crystal has been given new life thanks to the Boom! Studios imprint, Archaia, which will now adapt the original screenplay for the sequel into a 12-issue comic book. Originally written by David Odell (writer of the original film), wife Annette Duffy Odell, and Craig Pearce (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!), the story will pick up “countless decades” after the first film with a grown up Jen and Kira as the King and Queen of Thra, but they no longer feel the need of the Gelfings and the world they used to in the past.

Enter the Fireling Thurma, a brand new character who must get a shard of the Dark Crystal so that power may be restored in her realm, but accidentally brings the Skeksis and Mystics back. Sounds like quite the adventure.

Simon Spurrier (X-Force, Judge Dredd) will adapt the screenplay into the comic, while Kelly and Nichole Matthews (Toil and Trouble) will handle the art. The first issue will hit local comic shops on February 15 next year. The cover for the first is drawn by Jae Lee and June Chung.

President and CEO of The Jim Henson Company, Lisa Henson said of the comic, “Like the ending of The Dark Crystal, in which the duality of good and evil is collapsed and reconciled, the story of The Power of the Dark Crystal is that of reconciling the inner and the outer worlds—perhaps even the unconscious and the conscious. This is an amazing and original theme.”

How excited are you for the comic? When was the last time you saw The Dark Crystal? Let us know in the comments below!
