While many Batman fanatics believe that the Batmobile created by George Barris for the 1966 television series was the Dark Knight’s first ride, did you know that there was another officially licensed car that preceded the 1966 Barris Batmobile by three years and it was built in the U.K.?
Forrest Robinson is the creator of the actual very first Batmobile in 1963 in the U.K.! The at the time 23 year old Robinson created this very unique custom ’63 Batmobile out of a 1956 Oldsmobile. By using the ’56 Oldsmobiles one-of-a-kind body to create this awesome looking piece of living comic art! The funny thing here is that the car looks very similar to the one George Barris did 3 years later for the classic ’66 TV show staring Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin).
Here is some background information on why the car was created: It seems that is was DC Comics themselves who licensed the car to a ice cream company named All-Star Ice Cream. It just so happens the ice cream company was also selling Batman ice cream at the time. In a genius marketing plan the Batmobile was then used to promote the ice cream by having the car appear at local grocers and stores who would be selling the Batman ice cream. Now for some very strange reason this amazing looking Batmobile was discarded and left to rest in darkness for 50 years!! Now the Dark Knight Rises again and this gorgeous vehicle has been fully restored and brought back to its prime. The car will now be auctioned to the highest bidder and probably the biggest Batman fan in the world by Heritage Auctions.
Bidding on the Batmobile will begin November 17th and close on December 6th. An opening bid has not been placed yet. Here is a link to the Heritage Auction site for this Batmobile.
Now if I was a kid at that time and this Batmobile was at my local grocer store…….I’d be a very CHUBBY CHILD indeed!! Who wouldn’t go crazy over Batman Ice Cream and putting your sticky hands all over such a beauty of a car!
