Deadpool Star’s Tribute To Young Fan

Ryan Reynolds and "biggest fan" Conner

In a tender and heartfelt Facebook post, Ryan Reynolds paid final respects to devoted Deadpool fan Connor McGrath, who tragically lost the fight with cancer after a three year battle at the young age of 13. Reynolds met Conner when he teamed up with The Make Wish Foundation and spent time with him while the two watched an early screening of Deadpool, per his Wish.

It was during that time that Ryan and Conner grew close and it became evident what a special, intelligent and funny kid Conner was. Reynolds said in his post;

Connor was 13. But this kid… He was smart. He was funny. And not just funny ‘for a kid’ – or funny ‘for a person battling something awful’. He was unqualified funny. He had that… thing.

Reynolds also made sure to thank The Make a Wish Foundation for arranging their meeting and encouraged others to donate.

It was the Make-A-Wish Foundation that brought us together. I can’t thank them enough. Seriously. Thank you. Because of his wish, Connor was the first person to see Deadpool. I traveled up to Edmonton, Alberta to surprise him with a rough cut of the film. There were still huge sections with wires we hadn’t yet painted out, jokes which weren’t working (and still aren’t) and green screens. Connor didn’t seem to mind. And I’d never felt luckier to get to be Wade Wilson.

Cancer sucks. It digs its claws into the lives of good people and it takes some of the most unique and special individuals from us far too soon. Conner seemed like one of those kids, and although I have the deepest condolences and sadness for all of the people mourning his loss, I am also certain from the kind words so many have expressed that his memory and strength through so much hardship won’t be forgotten by those that knew and loved him…nor his love for Deadpool.

We met because he loved Deadpool. In a certain sense he WAS Deadpool. Or, at least everything Deadpool aspires to be; balancing pain, fearlessness, love and a filthy (filthy!) sense of humor in one body. I wish he could’ve stuck around a lot longer….See ya down the road, Bubba.
