One of the big attractions at this past weekend’s New York Comic Con was of course the panel for the upcoming 11th season of The X-Files, which returned last year with a six-episode 10th season. Well now we have our first look at what to expect when the beloved sci-fi series returns sometime in 2018. Take a look for yourself!
We also got details from the panel about what is in store when Mulder and Scully return to our television screens. Obvious one is that the season will pick up right where the previous finale left off and Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully’s son will be a central fixture in the upcoming main story arc. Also that the season will have a doppelgänger episode since in the trailer Scully does get a glimpse of a clone. Double the Gillian Anderson for everyone!
One thing of note from the panel was series creator Chris Carter promising more of Mitch Pileggi’s Walter Skinner in the new season, which is all good by me as he was barely a fixture last time around. The episode will take a look at a young Skinner. But it won’t just be Skinner’s past who we explore, as the first episode of season 11 is confirmed to explore the backstory of the Cigarette Smoking Man, one of the most iconic TV villains ever. We even got a glimpse at his younger self there at the end. Maybe that was the first smoke he ever puffed? Highly doubt that.
As for the episodes themselves, Carter confirmed how many episodes we can expect focusing on the larger mythology itself. “There are really eight standalone episodes and two mythology episodes, but, there is a character arc that spans all over those episodes.”
