Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Link Overlook

IGN got to sit down with the famed Reggie Fils-Aimé to get a closer look at what the special edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will contain. The special edition comes with the game, a music sound track, a statuette of the Master Sword, a nifty carrying case, and a parchment map.

It was during the sit down with IGN that Reggie, without actually saying a word, revealed the back story of the game. On the map that comes with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the typical outline of the over-world we’ll be exploring on March 3rd. However, it’s what’s on the back of this map that spilled the secrets of the game.

I will warn those reading that what follows could be considered a SPOILER. It does contain the story set up to the events in Breath of the Wild. Even though it is all history and lore, some may want to go into this game fresh. If that’s you, stop reading now.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, How it Begins

It all started with Reggie holding up the back of the map, pictured below.

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild SE MapSavvy gamers may recognize the writing on there as the language of the Sheikah. The Sheikah have long played an important part in LoZ lore. The ninja-like race has appeared in some capacity in many of the Legend of Zelda games, often as protectors of the royal family. In Breath of the Wild they seem to play a much more vital role in the story. We see Link using the “Sheikah Slate,” and the tech in the game is covered in their iconography.

Their ancient language has also already been translated into a language we can understand, and it is with this translation that YouTuber Zeltik got to work. Capturing a screenshot of the map above, Zeltik enlisted friends and began to translate the words. First converting the Sheikah language to Japanese, then translating that to english, we end up with the following:

“Hylians pass stories of a destined time long past where multiple races lived and worked together in harmony. The Sheikah Tribe’s blue aura breathed through the land and this mutual prosperity continued until a cataclysmic disaster stuck. The Hero and the Princess attempted to seal the terror which became known as the Calamity Ganon. Divine beasts awoke from four directions and deployed a mechanical army which made the King and his people fearful. They fractured Ganon’s power and sealed him but the Sheikah were banished from the land ever since.”

What Does it All Mean?

It certainly does read like something you’d see in a Legend of Zelda game, and assuming the translation is accurate, it gives us a general idea of the story line in the final game. There is no direct mention of the Tri-Force, but it’s safe to assume that it will once again feature. The lore also indicates that Zelda will in fact have a more vital role than princess to be kidnapped.

I can’t wait to find out how Breath of the Wild‘s story will play out. Unfortunately, we will all have to wait until March 3rd to delve into the latest from Nintendo. What do you geeks think of this reveal? Are you getting Breath of the Wild? Feel free to speculate in the comments below, or just express you hype for the game.
