Donald Glover Cast as Young Lando Calrissian in Han Solo Film

written by Jason Marcano October 22, 2016

Actor/rapper Donald Glover has landed a role that will change his life forever. Glover will play Lando Calrissian, a role famously played by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back. Glover’s Lando will appear in the 2018 Han Solo spin-off film.

In Empire, Lando reluctantly betrays his long time friend Han Solo to save Bespin. Calrissian redeems himself in Return of the Jedi when he goes undercover and assist in Han’s rescue. Lando goes on to lead the charge on the assault on the second Death Star.

Donald Glover has been long rumored for the role of Lando Calrissian, but was only confirmed just yesterday by Lucasfilms. The Han Solo film will be spearheaded by Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. According to them, the movie will show Lando in his “formative years.”

In an official statement on the matter, Lord and Miller had this to say:

“”We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

Yes, now Donald Glover will be mobbed by rabid Star Wars fans at any ‘Con he goes too. Somehow, I don’t think he’ll mind so much. To be a part of a legacy as large as Star Wars, and to land such a vital role, is a dream come true. I’m positive Glover is grinning ear to ear at right about now.

Donald Glover’s most recent work, the surprise FX hit Atlanta, is more than enough to qualify him for this role. The man is a genius who gets better each time we see him. While you wait to see him don Lando’s cape next to Alden Ehrenreich‘s young Han, Glover will be in Spiderman: Homecoming.

Good news or bad news geeks? Donald Glover is a talented actor and musician. No doubt he’ll kill the role as a young Lando. Let us know what you think about this in the comments. Until then, may the force be with you.
