Gearbox Software dropped some pre-release info on our noggins and was it ever attention grabbing! Since Microsoft isn’t doing it with Halo 4, Gearbox is prepared to go the distance with three versions of the game when it comes out later this year. We’ve got your standard edition, the bigger Deluxe Vault Hunter’s Collector’s Edition and the “Might be time to take out a second mortgage on the house to build additional space for” Ultimate Loot Chest Limited Edition!

The poor little standard edition nets fans the game only for $59.99, perfect for those on a limited budget or living in a cardboard box. Got a little extra cheddar and want to trash your significant other’s collection of Easter Island snow gloves? You might have fun with the Deluxe Vault Hunter’s Edition. For the low cost of $99.99, you can take home a box full of Borderlands swag! Tucked inside the gloriously designed box will be an “authentic” Marcus bobblehead, hardbound art book, map of Pandora, a quartet of stickers, comic book download and of course the game and case.

Jump the break for the end all be all Borderlands 2 set…

If you have a good chunk of change and are willing to convert your dungeon into a storage facility, consider breaking the bank with the Ultimate Loot Chest Limited Edition. You get everything in the Deluxe edition plus a cloth map of Pandora, a four pack of lithograph postcards, Field notes from Sir Hammerlock, a Steelbok case for the game, A vending machine box for the Marcus bobblehead, a wide format ID chart of Pandora’s creatures and a certificate of authenticity. All of that comes packed in your very own replica loot chest from the game. Well played Gearbox, well played! This price tag for this puppy will set you back $149.99 but think about it, a place to hide more loot!

Borderlands 2 is set to hit the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on September 16th of this year. Pre-orders are available now, doing so at select retailers nets you access to the Premiere Club. Being a member of the club has its advantages like the Golden Key which unlocks a rare weapon in the Sanctuary Loot chest, the Gearbox Gunpack full of Gearbox golden guns, the Vault Hunter’s Relic to grant you better fortune while looting and the new Mecromancer when she becomes available.

If you happen to pre-order at Gamestop, you also will snatch up the Creature Slaughter Doe and Moxxi’s Rocket Launcher. The Dome pits you against the meanest and baddest monsters on Pandora, defeat them for XP, cash and fame! The question is geeks: how do you plan on spending your cash? Hit us up and spill it!

Up until recently if you were to ask Siri “What is the best smart phone ever?” Siri would answer with the Nokia Lumia 900. Apple has acted fast and now the iPhone’s personal assistant will answer with iPhone 4S or something like “the one you’re holding” and “you’re kidding right?”. The non Apple reply was caused by Siri’s relying on Wolfram Alpha, which chose the Lumia 900 as best smart phone due to a catalog of four different five-star ratings. Wolfram Alpha will still offer up the Lumia 900 as answer to best smart phone if you search the service independently of Siri.

The small amount of reviews Wolfram Alpha used to determine the Nokia Lumia 900 as best smartphone is not really pushing me to abandon my iPhone but I do find it strange that Apple is dictating Siri’s answers. However I can also understand that Apple wouldn’t want the personal assistant directing their users to the competition. Siri you silly girl, thinking you could have your own opinions.

What are the odds that we would have TWO contest running at once? Consider the odds broken, cracked or in someway altered because we’re back with yet another geeky giveaway! This time we have two copies of the pseudo remake of the ’80′s classic Teen Wolf. Instead of trying to remake and possibly destroy a beloved cult classic, MTV\MGM\Fox decided to make an angsty TV drama centered around a loner teen who just happens to get bitten by the elusive werewolf one night. No inherited genes, no sweatbands and no hot naked chicks!

Consider this one a crossbreed of The Vampire Diaries, Twilight and every bay day of high school. The rabid protagonist must fight his inner beast, woo the girl of his dreams, avoid her father – for more reasons than one – and remember to unclog the drain after he takes a shower. Awww, I remember those days.

If you end up winning one of the DVD sets, you can look forward to all 12 episodes, an extended version of the season finale episode Code Breakers, a gag reel, a handful of featurettes and some alternate, deleted and extended scenes. There’s even a “Shirtless Montage” sans the hot chicks – I think. If they’re in there too, sign me up for a repeat viewing!

Itching to get your claws on a set? Hit that break and get your entries in!

Entry is as simple as doing the Rafflecopter! Get as many or as few entries as you want. Come back daily to gain an extra entry by tweeting. Winners will be chosen at random and contacted for their shipping info. Winners will have 24 hours to respond, failure to do so will result in forfeiture and a new winner will be drawn. Due to Sponsor discretion, winners can only reside in the U.S. and Canada. Good luck!

80’S MOVIES REWIND

“Teen Wolf” was based on the original 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox in the leading role and shares a similar plot in comparison to the TV show remake. In celebration of the DVD release of the TV show adaptation, we will take a look back at other 80s films that would make great TV shows such as: The Breakfast Club, Adventures in Babysitting, and The Goonies.

THE BREAKFAST CLUB

One cannot discuss 80s movies without touching on the John Hughes film that transcended generations after it’s initial release in 1985 – The Breakfast Club. The movie tells the story of five high school students who are forced to spend one Saturday in detention together. Belonging in different cliques in their school, these five strangers come face-to-face with each other’s problems and insecurities and learn to see pass their shallow outlook in life. This coming of age film is still one will continue to remain relevant for future generations.

ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING

Before Chris Columbus became a household name with film such as Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, he made his directorial debut in the 1980s film Adventures with Babysitting, starring Elizabeth Shue and Bradley Whitford. The story follows Chris Parker, a high school senior who’s set to go to her dream date with her boyfriend, Mike Todwell, when he cancels last minute and instead reluctantly accepts a babysitting job. While on the job, Chris receives a call from her best friend asking her to pick her up at the bus station in downtown Chicago and what follows is a night out on the town with two kids, underage grand theft auto and a gang fight.

THE GOONIES

The Goonies embodies a perfect 80s film – especially for those who grew up in that decade. The plot centers around a group of best friends who find themselves on a treasure hunt around their town of Astoria after they find a map in the attic. Before their town gets taken over by a wealthy tycoon to turn their homes into a golf course the group, consisting of Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Data, Brand, Stef and Andy, decide to take one last adventure together and go hunting for treasure. The film had everything kids love – adventure, comedy, a little something to keep you on edge and quotable lines like Chunk’s “Truffle Shuffle.”

          E.T.

No other character from the 80s may be more iconic than the alien in E.T. who was left behind by his ship on a strange planet while collecting vegetation samples. ET makes his way from the woods to a suburban neighborhood when he is soon discovered by a boy name Elliot who decides to keep him for his own. Elliot does his best to hide his secret but it isn’t long before his siblings find out. The friendship between Elliot and ET makes this film into a an incredibly touching tale about friendship, especially once Elliot realizes that ET needs to get home and helps him do so by putting forth a plan in motion.

While not exactly a secret, this is Halo after all, Micrsoft pulled the curtain back on the Halo 4 Limited edition. So it doesn’t come equipped with a large plastic monstrosity (darn!), it still aims to capture the Halo fans’ hearts and cash. For $99, buyers get the game (duh!) inside a custom steelbook, a slew of launch and post launch DLC, Avatar goodies, featurettes and the real world UNSC Infinity Brief Packet.

The DLC contains a healthy mix of digital treats for the avid fan. There will be three post launch map packs released (release schedule TBD), each of them hosting three maps. That’s nine maps for those who suck at multiplication. Available day one will be a Spartan armor skin, Assault Rifle skin and emblem – all used in-game. Also packed in will be early access to the Specializations for your Spartan warrior. Specializations can be used to hit higher ranks in your career, add customization options and more. 343 promises to drop more info on these at E3.

Looking for other items to get your motor running? How about a new, shiny set of Spartan armor for your Xbox Avatar? Maybe a prop so they don’t feel lonely? Yep, the limited edition has you covered there. Plus the 90 minute live action Halo 4: Unto Dawn comes along. The series is a prelude of sorts to Halo 4 and tells the tale of a cadet who becomes a force to reckoned with on the UNSC Infinity.

More after the jump…

If you happen to be in the mood for something you can grasp in your sweaty mitts, the Infinity Brief Packet is right up your alley. The packet contains a Spartan customization schematic, an introduction to the Infinity, weapons info and more to bring fans into the vastness of the fictional game vessel.

Halo 4 is coming November 6th and can be pre-ordered now. The regular edition is still the usual $59.99 and the Limited Edition will go for $99.99. No Legendary Edition this time geeks! Let’s hear it folks, must buy or wait for the price drop?

Update: Verizon has cleared the air on the specifics of the elimination of the unlimited data plans. Anyone buying a new, subsidized phone for either 3G or 4G will be forced unto the shared or tiered data plans this summer. Anyone willing to fork over the cash to buy one at full price will be allowed to keep their unlimited data as is. No one is being forced over if they don’t buy a new, discounted device through Big V.

– Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
– When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.
– Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.
– The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

Verizon is acting like a spoiled kid here – “Fine you do it my way or I’m gonna take away your G.I. Joes!”. The way to entice folks to sign those two-year contracts is to offer the discounted phones. If they’re going to start taking away more toys, how long before people stop shackling themselves and just buy the phones outright online?

“LTE is our anchor point for data share. So, as you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go on to the data share plan. And moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everyone into a tiered structure data share plan.”

That’s the standout quote from a speech Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo gave earlier at the J.P. Morgan Technology, Telecom and Media conference. The company plans on shifting all users to their upcoming shared data plans this summer, a move which will obliterate the all you can eat unlimited data plans. While the specifics are a bit vague, the gist is once customers are on LTE, they must ditch unlimited and go data share.

“a lot of our 3G base is on unlimited… [and] when they migrate off 3G they will have to go to data share.”

In an increasingly mobile based world, this desperately reeks of “mo’ money, mo’ money”. Nothing is to stop Big V from forcing customers into a shared bucket of 2GB with an overage fee of $10-20 per GB over. If you have two LTE devices on a shared plan, that 2GB will disappear quickly. Of course, users could stop using the data at a certain point but that practically cripples most smartphones today. We’ll await further news as it develops but I imagine this summer is going to suck for Verizon customers. And then the rest of us!

Truly a pun that had to be made. Since Diablo III‘s release on 15th May some players have found a bug that reportedly causes the player to be kicked from the game and then, to make things even worse, will prevent you from logging back into battle.net. This “error 3006″ seems to occur when you swap a shield with a Templar, so keep those shields and Templars well away from each other.

Another series issue with Diablo III is “error 37″ which locked players out of all aspects of the game, including the single player campaign. Blizzard posted on the Diablo Facebook page that these issues may be due to “a high volume of traffic” and so “login and character creation may be slower than normal.” Although bugs appearing in MMO’s on release day are no new thing, when they begin locking players out of the game they have paid for things begin to get a bit heated. Blizzard added that “We hope to resolve these issues as soon as possible and appreciate your patience” so wait we must.

As if publishing a series of unnecessary prequels to one of the most influential comic books in history weren’t enough of an insult, Warner Bros. (corporate overlords of DC Comics) has entered into a licensing agreement with the purveyor of the finest comic book schlock, Dynamic Forces, to launch a line of, yes, branded toasters, a line that includes Alan Moore’s Watchmen, or, at least, the movie counterparts to Moore’s seminal graphic novel. Now, the controversial comic book vigilantes aren’t the only ones receiving this *ahem* honor. You will also be able to mark your bread with the likenesses of characters from The Wizard of Oz, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Goonies and others.

It’s almost as if DC is trying to give Alan Moore a heart attack at this point. Why else would they okay something as ridiculous as a Watchmen-branded toaster? Who wants to burn the visage of Rorschach into their bread anyway? Chalk up another victory for crass marketing and exploitation, while creators once again receive the short end of the stick.

Click through for my reviews of two creator-owned comics whose auteurs will almost certainly be treated with more dignity by their publishers than DC Comics has treated Alan Moore.

Reviews

Higher Earth #1 (BOOM! Studios)

Sam Humphries burst onto the comics scene last year with the independently published Our Love Is Real, a 24-page black & white sci-fi kaleidoscope of pop weirdness. Full of fresh ideas and unique storytelling tricks, Our Love heralded a bold new voice in comics.

All of which makes the first issue of his latest BOOM! Studios title, Higher Earth, something of a disappointment. Like many of BOOM!’s titles, Higher Earth starts with a high concept, action-packed idea, something that would look great up on the big screen of your local cineplex in eye-popping 3D. This is what BOOM! does best, using its comics as storyboards for Hollywood pitch meetings. Unfortunately, this approach to publishing doesn’t always lend itself to the creation of deeply complex stories or characters.

Higher Earth #1 is a perfect example. It takes the idea of parallel universes and adds a neat twist, a hierarchy of Earths, in which Earths higher on the food chain use their lower counterparts as landfills, sending through portals trash and pollutants, destroying the ecosystems of those Earths deemed somehow lesser.

Onto one of these lesser Earths arrives … some guy. We never find out his name, even when he’s trying to convince someone to come with him, to trust him. Some guy with a sword shows up on this particular Earth looking for, it turns out, a young woman named Heidi, who is apparently on the run, or hiding. From who or what, we’re never told, but the guy with the sword knows who she is, not that he bothers telling us.

After the guy finds Heidi, he begins to tell her about all these parallel Earths, but they’re interrupted by some other guy with a sword. Again, this other guy has no name, but he’s wearing a uniform of some sort, including an armored helmet, so we don’t get to see his face. After the requisite sword fight, in which the other guy with a sword is dispatched, the first guy grabs Heidi and tells her they have to go, that they are going to keep coming for her, whoever the hell they are. He proceeds to drag her through one of the portals onto another Earth, which is apparently illegal to do, making her (and him?) a fugitive.

And that’s it. End of issue one. No answers, only questions. But not even interesting questions. First issues are supposed to introduce you to the world and the characters, not that we have to know everything right away, not that the writer isn’t allowed to keep some cards close to his chest, but for crying out loud, the guy with the sword doesn’t even have a name. He is simply “the guy with the sword.” And Heidi, the girl he dragged through the portal onto another Earth, she just goes along with this guy, because he tells her she has to. And so she does! She doesn’t know a thing about him, not even his name, and he just told her he’s from Earth, but not this Earth, and she doesn’t bat an eye, doesn’t ask any questions, she just goes with him. And don’t even get me started on the inexplicable bear mecha that Heidi rides around in.

Higher Earth #1 tries to set the stage for this cool sci-fi adventure. It thinks it’s being clever by not divulging any of its secrets, but Higher Earth is neither enigmatic nor mysterious, it’s sloppy. By the end of the first issue, here’s what we know: multiple Earths, guy with a sword, girl named Heidi. No context, no idea of what the story is about, only questions that, at this point, aren’t interesting enough to get me to care about what happens next. I’ll take a look at the second issue, to see if something resembling a plot shows up, but I won’t be holding my breath.

Even the artwork, by Francesco Biagini, is underwhelming and generic. It’s adequate for the story, but hardly memorable. In truth, the best things about Higher Earth #1 are its covers, specifically the ones by Frazer Irving and David Aja. Seeing their work first makes me wish one of them had drawn the interior. Not that they could have made the story better, but they certainly would have made the story more interesting to look at.

Lobster Johnson: The Burning Hand #5 (Dark Horse)

Set in the ever-expanding world of Hellboy, this just concluded Lobster Johnson miniseries is a beautiful pulp noir that, if it existed solely for the purpose of showcasing the artwork of Tonci Zonjic, would be reason enough. Zonjic, colored by Hellboy staple Dave Stewart, is the perfect artist for a dark, pulp fiction like “The Burning Hand.” His clean pencils and murky inks capture the gangland feel of Lobster Johnson’s world of mobsters and monsters. His art has a resemblance to the slightly animated style of Bruce Timm and Darwyn Cooke, but Stewart’s colors drag the art down into the dirt, giving it a more realistic, lived-in feel.

Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi, Lobster Johnson: The Burning Hand #5 is the conclusion of a story that involved a mob boss looking for outside help in stopping the vigilante Lobster Johnson from further damaging his operation. Unfortunately for him, he got more than he bargained for and things quickly escalated out of his control. Add demons, zombies and a plucky reporter out to get the scoop of the century, and you have the makings of a fun, blood-drenched monster noir that wouldn’t be out of place in the oeuvre of Raymond Chandler of Dashiell Hammett. Well, except for the monsters, of course.

Been sitting on an Ice Cream Sandwich capable Samsung device on the T-Mobile service? Been wondering when\if you might get the sweet and tasty upgrade to Android 4.0.4? Well guess what, Samsung has delivered part of the answer! The “if” portion has been revealed: the Galaxy S II, The Galaxy S Blaze 4G, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. That’s it folks, nothing else. Samsung has stated they would release upgrades to certain phones giving some ICS functionality in the near future.

Samsung is in close communication with both Google and our carrier partners to upgrade devices to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as quickly and as smoothly as possible. Specific models that will receive the ICS update include the following devices. Other specifics for the ICS update in the U.S. have not been announced.

The question is, does it really matter? Here we are six months out from the official release of 4.0, it itself getting three updates since then. Only one Samsung phone has received an official update to 4.0, the Sprint Nexus S 4G. Most users of the Galaxy S here in the states were lucky to grab the Gingerbread update shortly before ICS was announced which means we’ll be in the same boat once more. You know, because rumors are that Google will announce Jelly Bean later this year. Samsung is slowly weaning its customers off of caring about their new devices by the lackluster communication and untimely upgrades. So much for that Android Alliance.

We’re back geeks with another geeky giveaway sure to get your action bones going! Our forever friends at 20th Century Fox have saddled up with two copies of the upcoming spy comedy, This Means War, on DVD to give out to some lucky geeks. Haven’t heard of the flick? First – Shame on you! Second – let’s see what the studio says about it:

They are the CIA’s best, trained for any situation…except one. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment plays the ultimate spy game as two best friends fight for the right of one woman’s hand in THIS MEANS WAR, coming to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download May 22. Starring Academy Award® winner Reese Witherspoon* (Walk the Line), Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), the laugh-out-loud comedy gets even better on Blu-ray with three alternate endings that answer the question – what if she chose the other guy?

The world’s deadliest CIA operatives, FDR Foster (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), are inseparable partners and best friends until they fall for the same woman (Witherspoon). Having once helped bring down entire enemy nations, they are now employing their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis – each other.

Jog anything in your geeky brains now? It’s kind of like a mash-up of True Lies and Mr. & Mrs. Smith in my opinion. Reese Witherspoon is smoking fine (as always), plus the chemistry between Hardy and Pine is hilarious! I mean think about it, two spies using the vast resources of the CIA to win the affection of a girl while knocking the other guy out of contention? Who wouldn’t want to do that?

The latest victims of the Patent Wars have been quarantined and put on lockdown by customs. The One X for AT&T and the EVO 4G LTE for Sprint have been <del>seized</del> delayed by customs for review after the ITC dropped down an exclusion order in December. The exclusion order, in effect as of April 19th, bans the import and sale of certain HTC devices found to infringe on Apple patent(s). HTC has issued a statement, found below:

The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.

Coincidence that the shipment was <del>seized</del> delayed mere days before the EVO 4G LTE was scheduled to launch on the Now Network? Maybe but it certainly gives Apple plenty of laughs I’m sure. What’s odd is the One X has been on sale here for some time, AT&T has been selling them in store. My brother just bought one even. So why now? Stay tuned to DHTG as we wade through the mess to get all the details!
