Did you know there was a live-action version of The Little Mermaid coming out this summer? The final trailer was released this week and it shows an interesting take on the famous fairy tale. It seems the days of sea witches and handsome princes are gone.
The trailer shows a mermaid traveling with a circus during, possibly, the 1940’s. As a sideshow attraction, she catches the attention of a newspaper, and a reporter is sent to research the reports they have been receiving. She’s beautiful, he’s skeptical, and adventure ensues.
The trailer looks lovely. The transformations between woman and mermaid look smooth and believable. Having Mississippi as a setting is an interesting choice, especially during the 1940’s. The idea of mermaids in the Mississippi River isn’t as outlandish as it may seem. Manatees have been reported all around the Gulf of Mexico and it is a well-known story that mermaid sightings were actually manatees.
The Hans Christen Andersen version of The Little Mermaid focuses on the mermaid’s lack of a soul, something that was not as present in the Disney version. It seems like this new version might be harkening back to the original. It appears Elizabeth’s soul is being used to control her and keep her captive. Whether it is because the creepy ringmaster is in love with her, or she’s just an easy sell, is yet to be seen.
The few complaints in the comments of the trailer seem to revolve around the feeling that the entire movie seems to be laid out in the trailer. There is going to be some romancing on a riverboat. There is going to be a fight with the creepy ringmaster who is keeping her hostage. The mad dash to the water will probably end with a last-second save.
The Little Mermaid is a well-known fairy tale, so coming up with a different spin on it may be difficult. Breathing new life into a classic takes skill and it will be interesting to see what this studio does. Hopefully, with the new setting, it will bring enough that is different to make it feel standout and exciting.
The movie comes out on August 17, 2018. Are you going to check it out? Let us know in the comments!
