Announced at San Diego Comic-Con a few years ago, Warner Bros. finally showed off its first look at the King Kong reboot that explores the big ape’s home in Kong: Skull Island at this year’s convention. See it below!
No doubt we are certainly getting a much different take on the King Kong mythology here as we are no longer surrounded by the glitz and glamor of old-time Hollywood, but right in the middle of the Vietnam War.
Of course the crux of this film is exploring Kong’s home of Skull Island by further examining the place and culture far more than we’ve gotten in any version of King Kong. From the looks of it we’re certainly going into uncharted territory. Also absent seem to be dinosaurs, but its only the first trailer so we’ll wait and see on that. Though we are led to Skull Island via apparent deception from John Goodman and that of course doesn’t make Samuel L. Jackson very happy.
Intensity and intrigue are what we get here from the trailer itself and the brief, quick shots of King Kong, no doubt deliberate as it is from the same producers of the 2014 Godzilla film as they are building towards a new Godzilla vs. King Kong film. The music certainly helps to set the mood of terror and dread as we follow our main characters into this strange and unknown land.
Pacing is nice and tight and doesn’t give away too much, which I think we’d all like from more trailers today.
