The Hover Camera is a little gadget looks like a lot of fun. Zero Zero Robotics in Beijing have come up with a hovering camera drone that can follow you around, has completely enclosed rotors, and folds up to the size of a book. You can pluck it right out of the air, fold it up, and be on your merry way. It’s also light enough, 238 grams, that it falls below the weight that requires mandatory registration.
You control the device with an app on your phone, and a couple of buttons on the hover camera itself. It will follow you, or stay ahead of you, keeping steady. Sadly, you can’t have it follow you around all day recording your every action and thought. For one, a full charge of battery only lasts about 8 mins. The batteries are easy to swap out though, so I suppose you could keep a strict charging rotation. Also, it doesn’t appear to include a microphone. This is probably a good thing since the video review from the Engadget review reveals that the motor’s whine would probably drown out any other sound. Plan to have a wearable microphone, or an old-school hand mic.
It will hopefully hit the market this summer for about $600. I’d love to see people using the hover camera to show us little glimpses of their lives, to conduct interviews and reviews, or even make how-to videos. In reality we’re probably going to see a lot of video selfies.
