Fans of Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and his brilliant portrayal of Saw Gerber a rejoice! The legendary actor will reprise his role on Disney’s animated series “Star Wars Rebels”. Will you make it until his episodes air?

Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera iin Rogue One

Forest Whitaker is one of many standout cast members in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He played the part of Saw Gerrera, leader of a band of rebels on Jedha. Also, the Gerrera character originally appeared on another Star Wars animated series: “The Clone Wars“.

A new featurette highlights Gerrera’s journey from his time fighting in the clone wars to the time of “Rebels”.

Saw Gerrera, as voiced by Andrew Kishino, debuted in the fifth season of “Clone Wars”. He led a group of rebels (see a trend?) on the planet Onderon. Gerrera worked with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano to defeat the Confederacy of Independent Planets.

Show runner Dave Filoni praised Whitaker, saying:

It’s an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in “Rebels”. Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it’s too late.

Rogue One continues to rack up dollars at the box office, having the second strongest December opening of all time. First place belongs to Episode VII, of course. I loved the movie, and most critics agree. Rotten Tomatoes is holding at a solid 84%, not far behind The Force Awakens’ 92%.

It’s fantastic to see this character get recurring appearances in the Star Wars universe. It is even better that an actor of Forest Whitaker’s caliber will continue playing the role. Season 3 of “Star Wars Rebels” continues on January 7, 2017. Gerrera is set to first appear in episode 12, “Ghosts of Geonosis Part 1”, on Disney XD.

Geeks, will you be watching? How do you feel about Whitaker voicing the character in the animated series, instead of Kishino?
