Excelsior, true believers! A movie is being made about Stan Lee, creator of some of the most beloved and iconic superheroes from Marvel Comics. Hold on though, this isn’t the movie you’re expecting and not from who you think.
The life rights of Lee aren’t with Marvel Studios, but 20th Century Fox, holder of the film rights for the X-Men and Fantastic Four. In addition to that, its not exactly going to be the type of Hollywood biopic you’d expect in the vain of Ray or Walk the Line. Nope, Stan Lee is going to be a secret agent in an action-adventure movie. Yes you read that right, Stan Lee, secret agent.
The Stan Lee movie will be set in the 1970s, right about the time Lee went to Hollywood to try and get his characters adapted to film and TV, and more resemble the style and tone of movies such as Roger Moore’s James Bond films and Kingsman: The Secret Service, which itself was a love letter/sendup of spy films from that time. So for those that wanted to see Lee’s journey from a kid in the Bronx, to Timely Comics, the creation of the Fantastic Four, and even his relationship with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, you’re out of luck.
Lee is of course going to executive produce the film himself and will do so alongside POW! Entertainment partner, Gil Champion. Producers of The Maze Runner and the upcoming Power Rangers, Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are attached to produce the film as well with executive Matt Reilly set to oversee the project for Fox.
Right now no writer is attached to the movie so things could change from here until camera start rolling.
Though one must wonder that for all the cameos Stan Lee has made in Marvel Comics adaptations, will he make a cameo in a movie about himself?
