From King’s Landing to Coruscant, Braavos to Dagobah; David Benioff and D.B. Weiss bring their legendary character depth and talent for dripping an audience to a new Star Wars trilogy in a galaxy far, far away.
It has been announced just two days ago that the creating team (Benioff & Weiss) who brought us HBO’s Game of Thrones will be giving us yet another storyline to follow in the Star Wars Universe. Their work will be independent of the trilogy that director Rian Johnson is slated to take on.
The president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, stated this in regards to Benioff & Weiss coming on-board:
David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.
Currently, there are no release dates, titles, or even a general idea of what kind of story we are going to get out this writing team. Benioff’s & Weiss’ focus remains mostly on Game of Thrones, which will finally give us its eighth season in 2019, concluding the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning fantasy-drama series. One could speculate that Benioff’s and Weiss’ Star Wars storyline will be as gritty, gripping, and addictingly surprising as Game of Thrones is.
Imagine that, fellow geeks! Game of Thrones with Jedi and Sith Lords!
The Star Wars Prodigies
To be handed something like Star Wars these days is a large responsibility. Ever since a galaxy far, far away was incepted, it has worked its way up to being the foundation of eclectic opera pieces.
The writing duo expressed the gravity of this privilege in a joint statement:
In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.
Personally, I feel Benioff & Weiss gave the best statement they could have possibly given that will carry weight to the fans of Star Wars. It shows that they know exactly what they have in their hands and that they will treat it with the utmost respect and dignity that it deserves.
What do you geeks think? Do you think David Benioff’s and D.B. Weiss’ success and storytelling with Game of Thrones will transfer over well to the Star Wars Universe?
