If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, Hardcore Henry is a sci-fi action film unlike any of its kind, shot entirely from the first person perspective, using a GoPro camera.
Unfortunately, although many thought the movie was poised to be the first of a new genre of action films set entirely in this immersive format, Hardcore Henry has received mixed reviews since its April 8th release.
It currently stands at a 49% (5.2/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and holds a C+ on Cinema Score.
Although after seeing Hardcore Henry, my first impressions seem to agree with the Rotten Tomatoes critique that the film lacks plot and depth. I also can’t help feeling like it was no more lacking plot than any Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, or Mission Impossible film popular in the 90’s. And arguably, I would go as far as to say, several of the James Bond movies.
I think the debate in regards to this movie comes down to that “sci-fi” descriptor. Have no misconceptions, this is an ACTION movie with a sci-fi twist. In my opinion, going in keeping that in mind makes the movie far more enjoyable and even at times reminiscent of a bygone era when we watched action movies for …well…action.
That is not to say the movie doesn’t have issues; the first person camera can be a bit disorienting in particularly chaotic moments and the story’s villain looks like a Russian Curt Cobain in a too-tight brick colored turtle neck and tight black pants.
Nevertheless, I have to say, over all, I enjoyed seeing Hardcore Henry and I would watch it again once it’s out of theaters. However, if you are the kind of person that finds unnecessary jumping or spinning of the camera nauseating, I’d skip this one, or at least watch it alone in the safety of your own home.
