The year is 1987. Hironobu Sakaguchi made his mind up. Either his final chance to make a video game would do well, or he would go back to university. His final effort produced one of the most storied franchises in video game history. While the name misleading, Final Fantasy is anything but final. With the 30th anniversary coming up, many are celebrating the famed series in different ways. While most are through song and comic books, other will celebrate through drink.
Scottish distillery Glenfarclas is producing a Single Malt Scotch Whisky to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the beloved series. Distilled in 1987, the same year the first game came out, the whisky will only have a limited run of 303 bottles. Speaking of the bottles, the label is designed by Final Fantasy character designer Yoshitaka Amano. While unique, the label does feature some familiar features. Chocobos and Moggles adorn the bottles label, bringing the whole thing together. The whisky is now up for preorder and will run you $330. Shinanoya, the retailer selling the whisky, states it will go on sale on February 2. While expensive, this is sure to be a collector’s item for some.
Final Fantasy holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers. While everyone has their favorite, the series as a whole continues to capture hearts. Even after 30 years, the series is going strong. The latest, Final Fantasy 15, won the hearts of many who thought the series to be over. With the relaunch of Final Fantasy 14 as well, the series seems to be here for the long haul. You might even want to enjoy the whisky while playing your favorite Final Fantasy game. Although if you drink too much, you’ll end up in your own Final Fantasy.
