A while back, Google revealed their plans for Project Jacquard. It’s their foray into smart clothing, bringing tech and fashion together. When wearable smartwatches aren’t enough, you can now count on your jacket to read off your texts!
Jacquard by Google transforms clothing. It’s an entirely new take on wearables that lets you do more than ever with the things that you love and wear every day. With Jacquard technology woven into the very fabric of your clothes, you can connect to your digital life instantly and effortlessly. With a literal brush of your cuff, you can navigate your life while living it.
Jacquard currently offers abilities designed for urban commuters. Here are just some of the things you can do:
Communicate – Handle calls and texts without handling your device.
Navigate – Stay focused on where you’re going, not your screen.
Music – Stay in your groove. Play, pause, and skip through your favorite music.
So, here’s the deal. This Commuter Trucker jacket looks just like a normal Levi’s denim jacket. It’s classic, comfortable, no-nonsense, and it’s priced at a cool $350 American. Despite its traditional looks, it’s wired with Google’s new Jacquard tech. Using the companion app, you pair it to your compatible Android or iPhone and decide what you want your gestures to do. Swipe away at the cuff and magic happens. Get directions? Yup. Skip the current song? No problem. I’m excited to see what else they come up with in future updates!
Yes, this is gimmicky. No, I don’t care that it is. Would a smart jean jacket be a life-changing piece of clothing? Probably not. However, this can be an awesome stepping stone to even more advanced and progressive pieces of tech clothing. I’m thinking internet-connected space jumpsuits that light up like in Tron. Who’s with me?!
What do you geeks think? Is this super-connected IoT future for you, and is it worth $350? Let us know now!
