We’ve know for some time that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be coming home on August 8th for digital and the 22nd for Blu-ray and 4K. We also knew it would be packed with featurettes, cast interviews, commentary, and much more. Marvel has revealed today exactly what we can expect after we tear trough the shrink wrap and pop the disc into our respective media players.
In one of the most entertaining advertisements I’ve seen, two host who look liked they walked off an old VH1 set detail the contents included with the purchase of the movie. This infomercial adheres to the 80’s vibes set by James Gunn in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, it may even surpass it. Check out the acid wash jeans and hair teased to high heaven in the video below.
I know that after watching that, you’re wondering one thing: is that a real, working number? I can tell you that yes, it is, and while the initial message is a standard recording about the release date, the special message you get to hear by pressing “1,” is cute enough to warrant a listen. The URL in the infomercial just takes you to a launch site to pre-order the film, and pre-ordering is where it starts to get interesting.
What is now an expected practice in the video game world is steadily leaking into the world of Ultra 4K and Blu-ray releases. That practice? Retailer exclusives. If the phrase “retailer exclusives” makes you shudder you’re not alone, and you’re most likely a gamer. In the case of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, there are a few options with Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Target all offering slightly varying version of the disc.
Best Buy is offering a nice looking steel book edition.
Over at Target, they are claiming you can “meet the Ravagers.” But, as more details are only available inside the package, there’s no real way to tell what they mean by that beyond speculation.
If you choose to buy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at Wal-Mart you’ll score two packs of collectible Marvel trading cards from Upper Deck.
Finally, if you pre-order the digital version from somewhere like Amazon, you’ll receive a whole free month of Marvel Unlimited. Marvel Unlimited is a monthly subscription service that boast over 20,000 digital comics with new issues released regularly.
Where ever you prefer to shop, you’ll be treated to the same colorful and over-the-top adventures of Star Lord and his motley crew. As an added bonus, there will be a music video to the song below by The Sneepers featuring David Hasselhoff, “Guardians Inferno.”
Will you geeks be taking the Guardians of the Galaxy home with you when Vol. 2 releases this August? I know I haven’t had enough Groot in my life yet. What about you? Let us know in the comments below.
