He’s Back: John Simm Returning to Doctor Who as The Master

written by Jordan Cobb April 7, 2017

“Never say never,” isn’t just something that could be used to describe plenty of Doctor Who episodes and arcs, but be the series motto itself and the latest news for the upcoming tenth series has proven that.

John Simm is returning to Doctor Who as The Master. Yep, you read that right. This isn’t any timey wimey mess up. Though that could actually explain how he’ll pop up.

Simm himself said, “I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series.”

Simm played The Doctor’s evil half throughout the run of David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and was last seen in Tennant’s swan song, The End of Time where he gave us this lovely imagery.

What makes Simm’s return really interesting is that seemingly right now The Master has since regenerated into Missy; currently played by Michelle Gomez. Now apologizes for reaching way deep back into my nerdbag here, but this could lead to a discovery that Missy has been The Rani all along. The Rani herself if a renegade Time Lord and an evil genius that first debuted opposite Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor. The Rani has been theorized to show on this incarnation of the show ever since its return in 2005 and this news might slightly confirm that.

We’ve seen multiple Doctors together on screen before, but what’s not to say we can’t see multiple Masters in the same show?

Well we’re just gonna have to wait, but me, I’m very curious and excited to see how Simm will do against Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor.

How excited are you for the return of The Master? Who is your favorite incarnation of the character? Let us know in the comments below!
