What Is Hideo Kojima Getting Us into With ‘Death Stranding’?

A Genius, a Baby, an Unseen Enemy, and a Delivery Man

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is his first game since 2015. For a long while now, the game has been shrouded in mystery. However, we finally have a trailer and it answers… only some of our questions. Honestly, I am still very confused. Before we go further, check out the trailer below.

Confused? I am. So after years away, Hideo Kojima comes back with a completely new game – not just a new game but a new type of game. Death Stranding is an open world, partially multiplayer action game. While some of that is not clear from the trailer, what is clear is that this game will be a wild ride.

A Delivery Man

One of the biggest standouts of the trailer is Daryl Dixon himself, Norman Reedus. The Boondock Saints alumn was motion captured into the game as the lead. Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo del Toro, Léa Seydoux, and Hideo Kojima have also been motion captured into the game. Not much is known about the other characters, but Norman Reedus is clearly a delivery person of some sort. From what we see in the trailer, it looks like a lot of the game will be travel and survival. The other half of the trailer is terror, mystery, horror, and something else.

The Invisible Enemy and a Baby?

The game’s biggest enemy is an invisible thing. It looks like it could be aliens or monsters. Whatever it is, it’s terrifying. It looks like there isn’t a way to kill it. Death Stranding’s enemy is unseen and unkillable. The only way around it is to sneak. So like Metal Gear Solid, you gotta hide through the game.

Also, there’s a weird baby. Like weird as in possibly psychic or maybe one of those monster aliens. Whatever this baby is, it’s hanging out in a pod on Norman Reedus’s chest. Also, it looks like at some point the baby is inside his stomach. Death Stranding looks like a surreal trip of intense mystery. This is one of those games that would make me consider switching consoles.
