What happens if you want to make your home smart, but your landlord won’t let you change the locks? We gave the igloohome Smart Keybox a go!

The Internet of Things (IoT) is obviously one of the biggest trends in tech today, up there with VR. Among the plethora of Wi-Fi connected smart home devices, igloohome sent over this lock box for review. It’s special because it’s the first one that works offline. Instead of connecting to it through a network and controlling it remotely, you set up PINs via Bluetooth using your smartphone.

This smart lock is heavy for its size, as it’s made mostly of metal with some plastic. It feels solid and can take a beating. The circular touch PIN pad on the front feels nice, and the digits are pretty responsive. Inside, the Keybox has plenty of space for several keys, key cards, or anything else you would like to lock up.

Using the igloohome smart lock box is pretty easy. You can download their app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. In the app, set up custom PINs, including one-time use and timed codes. The app talks to the device through Bluetooth and it stores the PINs locally. Give a PIN to whomever you wish, and they will be able to get into the Keybox – even without your device or Wi-Fi in range.

The only thing I had difficulty with is the PIN-less access. If the app is running on your smartphone and you’re within proximity, it should unlock automatically. It was often delayed and didn’t always pop open. I found it much easier and quicker to just punch in a PIN and be done.

Despite that speed bump, I like this thing and can recommend it. I think it’s perfect for Airbnb or other short-term rentals, or even for delivery drivers and kids. Anyone who can’t install a smart lock on their actual doors could use the igloohome Smart Keybox.

What do you geeks think of this thing? Are you into IoT and smart home gadgets? Let us know in the comments!
