It’s almost 10 pm and I just finished the season 10 premiere of Doctor Who. There are many things to look out for, but my eye was on Bill Potts, the latest companion, more than anything.
Doctor Who is one of those noteworthy shows. It takes you to a whole other world, it’s unpredictable, and it keeps you glued to the screen. There could be many things wrong with the world, but somehow, the sound of the TARDIS entering a room makes it all right. So I went into getting to know this companion with high hopes for my beloved sci-fi television show.
So Let’s Get This Out Of The Way: She Likes Girls
Bill Potts sexuality was the forefront of many news outlets. It was refreshing to see that it flowed easily with the plot. There was no big “oh, you assumed I was straight but I need to make this awkward confession I’m actually gay”type scene. It went with the plot just as easily as it would if she were a straight character. You could tell that she was already comfortable with her sexuality, so instead of being in a questioning phase or agonizing over her sexuality, she very much owned it.
She Smiles When She’s Confused and It Warms Your Heart(s)
I like how they didn’t harp too much on explaining things we already know but she doesn’t. Questions like “Whats a Dalek?” were met with The Doctor having this look of “Yeah, girl, this is like on the job training right now. You’ll figure it out” Instead of frowning, she gives the biggest smile ever. I would also put her in the running for Companion’s Best Smile.
She Has The Best Hair of Any Companion Ever
Yup, I am just gonna downright say it. Fight me if you disagree. Seriously. You could stare at it for ages and never look at the same curl. Also, what’s gonna happen when it rains? It’s not gonna stay flat, it’s gonna poof back up and be curly again.
Her Name…Something Seems Familiar
Ok, I’m going to go all “Fan Theory” on you guys but hear me out. At first, I was like “Why is her name Bill?” Then I had a crazy thought. Bill Potts… Could Bill be an homage to Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper? Who knows, only time will tell.
I’m excited to see more of Bill. She’s funny, she smiles when she doesn’t understand something, her hair is gorgeous, and hey, at least we won’t have an entire episode of her trying to sleep with The Doctor. Honestly, there’s such a beautiful thing about being the Doctors companion. It doesn’t matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation you are. All that matters is that you have a decent pair of shoes on when The Doctor tells you to run.
Have you guys seen the premiere of season 10 yet. What do you think of Bill? How do you feel she ranks against other companions? Let us know in the comments below!
