James Cameron’s Science Fiction Documentary to Air on AMC

When one thinks of science fiction, James Cameron is almost certainly one name that will be thought of. The first two Terminator movies, Aliens, The Abyss, and the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar, all beloved in one way or another within the genre and public conscious. Well Cameron’s next project is sci-fi focused, but it’s coming to television.

AMC has officially picked up a six-episode documentary series said to premiere next year called as of right now, James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction and the goal of the series is to trace the evolution of the genre. The official series description reads:

Cameron introduces one of the “Big Questions” that humankind has contemplated throughout the ages, and reaches back into sci-fi’s past to better understand how our favorite films, TV shows, books, and video games were born, and where the genre – and our species – might be going in the future.

Science fiction has always been one of the most endearing genres out there for its way of using the time ahead of us to address the problems and issues of today and its willingness to tackle many subjects has obviously inspired Cameron as he stated in a released statement that, “When I was a kid, I basically read any book with a spaceship on the cover. I saw ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ many, many times. … The movie inspired me to become a filmmaker. I liked the special effects, but I really loved the ideas and the questions behind them: How will the world end? Will technology destroy us? What does it mean to be human? These are subjects sci-fi has never been afraid to tackle, with this series, we are going back to the origins of sci-fi, following the DNA of these ideas back to the source.”

Exploring the history of science fiction and where it might lead is a fascinating idea in of itself and having a voice like Cameron behind it will certainly make this one documentary to watch.

What do you think of the idea? Will you be watching when it airs? What’s your favorite James Cameron movie? Let us know in the comments below!
