In 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will enter some rather murky territory. The untitled 4th Avengers movie will conclude phase 3 of the MCU and leave our beloved heroes in an uncertain future. What will happen next? We now have an answer. It was confirmed today by James Gunn himself via his Facebook page that he will be returning to write and direct the 3rd installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.
He also confirmed that it will bring things to a natural conclusion.
Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.
With a few stars’ contracts due to expire after Avengers 4, it makes sense to bring this chapter to a close to make way for a mild reset of certain characters whether we like it or not.
Gunn and Co. surprised many Marvel fans both old and new when Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014. Many comic book fans were delighted with its inclusion and those unfamiliar with the team were left feeling skeptical about its potential. It was a gamble to take a relatively unknown franchise and give it is own place within the MCU, but it paid off. Guardians was the breakout star of Phase 2, and Star Lord and the gang cemented themselves as a team to be reckoned with.
Vol. 2 looks to capture that magic again. Early reactions have been extremely positive and we get our chance to see it for ourselves in just over a weeks time. Can’t wait.
Are you geeks happy that James Gunn will return, or do you think someone else should get a turn with the Guardians brand? Let us know in the comments!
