Jess Cliffe, one of the guys behind the infamous giant Counter-Strike and current game designer for Valve, was arrested Thursday for sexual exploitation of a child. Apparently, Cliffe paid $300 for sexual services from a website and had a date with someone from that site where he actually filmed the act on his phone as well, against the minor’s will. Now, the story goes that he wasn’t aware that the date he had set up was with a 16-year-old girl, according to his attorney. His attorney also said that Cliffe wasn’t even looking for underage women, considering he was on an adult website.
Cliffe, along with a Minh Le, was responsible for creating the ever popular mod Counter-Strike for Half-Life while he was a student at Virginia Tech. More recently, according to his Valve bio, he was responsible for level design on Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Left4Dead 2, and Portal 2. He was also known for the famous “Counter-terrorists win!” voice-over in Counter-Strike. Living in West Seattle and working in Bellevue, Cliffe graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Management Science. He also ran his own hobbyist photography website focused on vintage Seattle until 2012.
The bail was posted in the amount of $150,000. At the bail hearing, the 36-year-old stood in a red jumpsuit and did not say a word. The judge that set the bail limit also described Cliffe as a flight risk, can’t carry firearms and a “risk to the community based on these findings”. A no-contact order was filed between Cliffe and the witness and is set to expire on February 23, 2018.
Valve released the following statement:
“We are still learning details of what actually happened. Reports suggest he has been arrested for a felony offense. As such we have suspended his employment until we know more.”
