Ringing in the New Year with good news, Marvel announced the return of its title Exiles in April 2018. That’s right comic geeks, the multiverse is about to do us a solid and kick out some new adventures. The storytelling will be in the hands of Hugo-nominated writer Saladin Ahmed (if you haven’t read Throne of the Cresent Moon fix that STAT).
Monday, January 8th, Marvel Comics unveiled the final team member…Valkyrie.
According to Ahmed, readers can expect this iteration of Valkyrie to seriously remind us of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie à la Thor: Ragnarok.
Valkyrie’s a character who’s always appealed to me. Her iconic warrior-woman look—spear! sword! flying horse!—but also the juxtaposition of a kickass ancient fantasy hero operating in contemporary New York City. She’s a classic Marvel heroine,” explains Ahmed.
He went on to say,
But the EXILES version of Valkyrie is a bit different from what we’ve seen in comics thus far. Our Valkyrie is known as the Lone Defender of Asgard, and she’s a tankard-draining, maiden-wooing, giant-slaying thunderbolt of a woman. Though she’s not technically from the Marvel Cinematic Universe reality, she’s basically the literalization of the larger-than-her-physical-frame swagger that Tessa Thompson displayed in ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ turned up to 11.
Here’s the team:
Like many of us, the folks over at Marvel embraced Tessa Thompson’s turn as the Valkyrie. Series editor Wil Moss went so far as to say,
Like everyone else who has seen Taika Waititi’s brilliant THOR: RAGNAROK movie, all of us on Team Exiles are big fans of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. So when we realized that we had the perfect series — where the roster is made up of alternate reality versions of Marvel heroes — to introduce a comic book equivalent of that version of Valkyrie, we jumped at the chance! And how great is series artist Javier Rodriguez’s design? Such a nice combo of the classic Valkyrie look and the MCU’s, yeah?
If weren’t into Exiles the first time around, you’ve been adulting and missed the previous announcements, here’s the quick and dirty: Nick Fury, known as The Unseen, recruits a team with a mandate to defend the multiverse against all comers. Visuals for Exiles are in the hands of artist Javier Rodriguez.
You can pick up Issue 1 on April 11th – and Issue 2 two weeks later – when the team swings into action to save an alternate present from destruction from Marvel Comics.
