Original Beastie Boys band member, John Berry, passed away Thursday morning at the hospice he resided in based out of Danvers, Massachusetts. He was 52 when he moved on.
Berry’s father, John Berry III, confirmed the news of his son’s passing to Rolling Stone stating that the cause of death was a progressive form of a frontal lobe dementia. According to his father, it was a long battle that unfortunately became unstoppable in the past few months.
Fans of the hip-hop band might know that Berry was actually the reason behind the name chosen for this in your face group growing up. Back when the boys got together in 1981, Berry teamed up with Mike Diamond, Kate Schellenback, and Adam Yaunch to debut their eclectic sound.
Though Berry did leave the group fresh out of the gates in 1983, he was still very much a part of the band’s legacy. He was even mentioned in the Beastie Boys’ speech during their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in ’12 while the group paid their respects to fallen member Adam Yauch who passed away due to cancer at the young age of 47.
Whether you were a long time fan of the band or you just liked to fight for your right to party, John Berry’s roots within that particular musical legacy and his other journeys into the musical world will be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with Berry’s friends and family during this difficult time.
