When it comes to Highlander, there can be only one. Not just in highlanders themselves, but good movies it seems amongst its fans.
Ever since the release of the 1986 action fantasy film, its been a bit downhill with all the subsequent sequels and the response from not just fans, but critics as well it seems, though the syndicated live-action TV series is actually fondly liked to this day. Regardless though, there have been talks over several years of an attempt to reboot the franchise towards the silver screen, but its been stuck in that all too familiar place, development hell.
The first rumblings started way back in 2008 and since then has had numerous names attached to it only for them to run away as fast as The Flash. Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond, Fast and Furious franchise), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), Ryan Reynolds, and Dave Bautista to name a few have all been at one point pinned to the project, but has since dropped out of it.
Fortunes for the reboot seem to be on the rise now since director of John Wick (and its upcoming sequel), Chad Stahelski has signed on to officially direct the long proposed project.
Stahelski himself is excited about coming onto the film, saying to the Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school. Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”
Joining Stahelski on Highlander will be producers Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis with Lionsgate being the studio behind the movie. Of course should this happen and it becomes a success, we might be seeing the birth of yet another franchise.
